I do not need the government to support the arts on my behalf. I am fully capable of doing it myself, and do so. Quite frankly, some of the things that have been cut, according to this article, are not worth supporting anyway. The arts needs to be supported by their patrons, not the government.”

“I like art, but so much of it has nothing to do with me. I don’t feel particularly uplifted by a 20 foot wide canvas with nothing but a blue dot on it. The only social purpose that kind of art serves is to keep someone in government grants.”

“I’m hardly a conservative, but this is a perfect example of the sort of government spending that we don’t need — pork barrel support for mediocre art that interests the artist more than the audience.”

Fuck you very much NYTimes for featuring the big-hat-wearing lady of the Worlds Smallest Version of the Worlds Largest Things as the face of government funded arts. That’ll really get the public behind artist grants!

I love, LOVE Lucian’s later work (my first artistic heartbreak was realizing I didn’t have the chops to be in the same city, let alone the neighborhood, he was in) but I wonder if I don’t love his early stuff a bit more.
