While I appreciate the move to represent fashion with a younger, more active image I occasionally get sick of being advertised to through images of Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld. As a relatively young woman I’m all for youth in fashion, but a 14-year-old standing in for what is ostensibly is a mid 20s to 40s market rings just a wee bit false. Unless Miu Miu is now marketing itself to the damn rich parents of kids who want to go marching around like its still the 1940s. And as a relatively young woman beginning to getting-older-ness I’m wondering where is the image that reflects the reality of the womanly* body.
A model is a moving clothes rack that projects a certain lifestyle or image, that is the argument I hear. And I’ll buy it. But when your image is so at odds with your market… It comes down to an argument of whether or not we’re so youth obsessed that women are willing to accept a 14-year-old as a stand in for our own projected selves.
Basically, Where are the thighs and tits at?
I could think this one through more, but I won’t. I gotta watch some Murder, She Wrote and do some animating.
*”womanly.” Ewwww. That’s about as bad as “panties.”
