Empathy?
Im sorry, when does being empathetic have anything to do with reading and ruling on constitutional law?  But more importantly, no one would EVER care if a male judge was empathetic or not.  Geez.  I really really wish I had finished Jonah’s new book, but it is in Philly and I am not.

Best of Times, Worst of Times
Worst first, the Sunday NY Times is now five dollars.  My father argued with the guy at the deli only to find that everyone had their price upped.  The daily is now 2 dollars.  For one paper.  2 dollars used to buy almost a full week of papers. Best, Warmer, Fuzzier, the Refreshed Logo. Another great illustrative article from the New York Times.  This time on the new softer logos that are...

I Am A Dork
Yes, it is true. I’m not sure if that is the fashionable term (is it ‘nerd’ or ‘geek’?) to admit one’s embarrassing true nature. But a dork I am. Whenever I am ill, which I currently am, I watch me some Star Wars. It’s become something I don’t even think about. Ill and stuck in bed? Star Wars. When I was little we had some worn VHS copies that...

Favorite Place
There are a couple of things that anyone who knows me really well knows about me. 1. My favorite painting is Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent.  This love has less to do with my absolute love for the painting, but that when I first saw it in person, it was the first rime I realized I loved art.  The yellows of the lanterns seemed to glow to my 8 year old mind and it just...

Star Trek
I saw the new Star Trek a few nights ago. It was… dizzy. Entertaining, yes. But I am crazy sick of quick edits, shakey cameras, and unnecessary flashing lights. Which is 90% of the movie. -J

Everybody's Talking 'Bout
The new Precious poster. Annoyingly enough I can’t seem to Google my way to which company is responsible for the recently released Saul Bass styled teaser poster. Which got me thinking about good and bad stealing. It’s obvious to anyone who has spent any time in a video store/browsing Netflix that the Precious poster takes its quotes from Anatomy of a Murder (which is a great...

LEGO Architecture
LEGO is launching its Architecture brand, beginning with, of course, Frank Lloyd Wright.  Fallingwater and the Guggenheim.  This is the most exciting thing I have literally ever heard.  I am just so so so excited right now.  My brother and I REFUSE to let our mother get rid or any of our legos or even let visiting children we don’t know play with them. Read the press release and more info...

The Road Trailer
Issues already, there are about 200% more people in the trailer than in the whole book, and a female lead?  There is no female lead in the book.  But I do love me some Viggo Mortensen. -a

Hey J, want to talk about Feminism?
The bottom of this blog clearly says “About : Design film art animation ladytalk,” and this post certainly falls into the latter category. I will also include curse words, as I am heated. [Ed. Note: B/c I am quoting a lot of articles here, colloquialisms will be in single quotations and double quotations will be reserved for direct quotes only. No restatements, etc. Real direct quotes.] I...

Worst design ever.
I dont even know what to say about this.  These are covers from the daily intelligence briefings from Rummy.  GQ has a whole lot of them here.  They are equally fascinating, hilarious, and just really really really terrible.  Like seriously the US government cant get a deal on InDesign?  Or even page maker would do better than this.  All I can say is O LORD, if you are really there, how did you...

Talking bout my generation
I got a really good night of sleep last night, so maybe that’s why I’m so lucid right now, but I woke up and read Gawker and they have this article about The 90s vs the 90s panel at the New Museum last night.  The panel coincided with The Generational show at the New Museum which is subtitled “Younger Than Jesus” and features the work of artists under 33.  Well what I...

Makes me smile.
Bardians have this deep love of the Hudson Valley.  I guess you could just go to school anywhere if it wasn’t for the landscape and the architecture and the river and the mountains.  I grew up there too, so my love is really deep, but nevertheless, today that love is shared with the world on the NY Times. -a

The Aesthetics of the Apocalypse
I figured that I would go with J’s theme on this one. My house is abuzz with Cormac McCarthy’s, The Road. Everyone is either reading it, read it, or refusing to read it. Yes, it is a good book, but it is terribly depressing. Like the world is just incomprehensibly bleaker for at least three days following your completion of it, and the book is so hard to finish because you cant see...

The Aesthetic of Fantasy
I recently watched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with a friend and was surprised to see how realized the aesthetic of fantasy was. A lot has to do with where the film was shot. A kid doesn’t register that Charlie runs his paper route around some small German city. All you end up seeing is a city that is totally unlike any you’ve ever seen before. It’s the same but...

Terrain and Greensgrow
Sorry about the lack of postings.  I have been deathly ill, and although I was 100% sure it was swine flu, it was a terrible sinus infection and now I am better and can resume posting. Prior to deathly ill, Jeanie and I went to Terrain! And were terribly disappointed. It wasn’t like it wasn’t really cute.  The cafe was adorable, I actually really really like the bathroom…...

DaftFace
I get a kick out of the slightly/extremely daft looks models use when doing their modelling thing. While I find this more silly than anything else - their range seems to run from ‘Offended’ to ‘Checking To See If There is Something Up/On My Nose’ to ‘Slightly Queesy’ - most leave the models exhibiting their very best DaftFace. It has been noted that there...
